How to Choose Industrial Caster Wheels
Choose an industrial caster by checking seven items in order: load basis, mounting, wheel material, wheel diameter, movement, brake or swivel configuration, and operating environment. A product photo or wheel diameter alone is not enough to confirm a safe match.
Prepared by KORONO Industrial Casters for importers, distributors and equipment manufacturers. Reviewed 23 October 2026. This guide helps prepare an RFQ; the selected model's load rating, material grade and application suitability must still be confirmed in writing.

Seven steps for choosing an industrial caster
- Define the loaded equipment weight. Include the equipment, maximum payload and any attached fixtures.
- Choose a calculation basis. Use the number of casters that can actually carry the load at the same time, then allow for uneven floors, impact, speed, towing and load distribution.
- Match the mounting. Record top-plate dimensions and bolt-hole pattern, or complete stem dimensions and fixing method.
- Describe the floor and environment. State joints, thresholds, debris, water, chemicals, temperature and floor-marking or noise requirements.
- Compare wheel material and diameter. Treat material names as a starting point; compound, hardness, core, bearing and exact rating are model-specific.
- Define movement and control. State manual, powered or towed movement, speed, travel distance, turns and the required rigid, swivel and brake arrangement.
- Confirm the exact model. Match the quotation, drawing, sample and order confirmation to one model and configuration before purchase.
How to establish a caster load-capacity requirement
Start with total loaded weight divided by the number of casters expected to support the load at the same time. For a four-caster base used on an uneven floor, a common preliminary check uses three load-bearing casters because one wheel may temporarily lose full contact.
Preliminary requirement per caster = total loaded weight ÷ effective load-bearing caster count.
Example: for 600 kg of loaded equipment on four casters, using three as the preliminary load-bearing count gives 200 kg per caster before any additional allowance. This is only a starting calculation. Dynamic impact, towing, speed, ramps, floor defects, load position and applicable safety requirements can increase the required rating. Ask the supplier to confirm the rating basis for the exact model.
Information needed before confirming load
- Equipment weight and maximum payload
- Number and layout of casters
- Manual, powered or towed movement and maximum speed
- Floor joints, thresholds, ramps and possible impacts
- Load position and whether weight can shift
- Required standard, test method or customer acceptance criteria
Top-plate or stem mounting
| Mounting | Measure before selection | Common mismatch to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Top plate | Plate length and width, hole centres in both directions, bolt-hole diameter and overall height | A similar plate outline with a different bolt pattern |
| Stem | Stem diameter, usable length, thread or fixing type, engagement length and overall height | Matching diameter but the wrong thread, length or retention method |
For replacement work, use the step-by-step replacement caster measuring guide and attach a mounting drawing or clear photos.
How to compare caster wheel materials
Material choice is application-specific. The descriptions below are screening questions, not performance guarantees. Confirm the exact compound, hardness, core, bearing, temperature range, chemical compatibility and load rating for the selected model.
| Material family | Why buyers consider it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Polyurethane (PU) | Often considered where buyers need a balance between rolling, wear and floor contact | Hardness, core material, bonding, floor marking, chemicals, temperature and rating |
| TPR or rubber | Often considered where cushioning, floor contact or noise matters | Compound, deformation under load, rolling resistance, contaminants, temperature and rating |
| PP or other rigid thermoplastic | Often considered for a harder solid wheel and straightforward cleaning | Exact polymer grade, floor impact, debris, temperature, chemicals and rating |
| Unconfirmed solid-wheel material | A catalogue colour or general product name is not enough to identify the material | Material specification, model code, drawing and any required test or compliance document |
Wheel diameter, obstacles and mounting height
A larger wheel can change how the equipment crosses joints or small obstacles, but it also changes mounting height, available clearance, turning geometry and cost. Compare wheel diameter together with tread width, overall mounting height, swivel radius and the equipment's available space. Do not replace a wheel by diameter alone.
Rigid, swivel and brake configuration
- Rigid casters guide travel in a fixed direction.
- Swivel casters allow steering but require enough swivel clearance.
- Swivel-with-brake configurations must be checked for the required wheel and/or swivel locking function.
State the quantity of each configuration in the RFQ. The correct layout depends on equipment length, steering needs, movement method and operating conditions.
Compare rigid, swivel and brake caster photos
These workshop photographs show three configurations in the Series 16 heavy-duty TPR range. They are configuration examples, not three views of one exact model. Confirm dimensions and the required locking function for the selected model.

| Configuration | Include in your enquiry |
|---|---|
| Rigid | Quantity, intended travel direction, mounting drawing and overall height. |
| Swivel | Quantity, steering requirements and the available space around the mounting for the caster to turn. |
| Swivel with brake | Quantity, required wheel and/or swivel locking function, pedal access and operating conditions. A visible pedal alone does not confirm the locking function. |
For other wheel families, compare actual configuration examples in Series 12 anti-winding PP and Series 08 light-duty black rubber. Similar-looking brackets do not establish interchangeable mounting or equal load ratings.

Frequently asked selection questions
Which caster wheel material is best?
There is no single best material for every application. Choose after defining the load basis, floor, obstacles, environment, speed, noise or marking limits and maintenance expectations. Confirm the exact grade and rating for the selected model.
Can four caster ratings simply be multiplied by four?
Do not assume equal load sharing on an uneven floor. Use the effective load-bearing caster count and ask the supplier to confirm any additional allowance for dynamic conditions and your application.
What should I send for a caster quotation?
Send the application, loaded weight, caster count, movement, floor and environment, mounting measurements, rigid/swivel/brake quantities, sample or bulk quantity and destination. Use the copy-ready industrial caster RFQ template if helpful.
Request a model recommendation and quotation
KORONO manufactures these caster ranges in Hengshui, Hebei, China. Final availability, material grade, load rating, sample terms, packaging, lead time, trade terms and freight are confirmed for the selected model and order.
